Deputy Director, Capital Planning and Investment

Our courts and tribunals underpin justice and affect the lives of millions every year. We run the criminal, civil and family courts, and the administrative tribunals, which means that criminals are brought to justice; children are kept safe; and business dealings are securely underpinned. We are proud of what we do, and of the heritage and reputation of our system. But we know that technology and modern ways of working could make it better yet, and make sure we continue to lead the world.

The Property Directorate is dedicated to the courts and tribunals estate with a mission to make the estate fit for purpose. The directorate is a diverse team of technical, professional and support staff working around the country and HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is proud of our commitment to providing a flexible workplace and encouraging diversity in our teams.

As Deputy Director for Capital Planning and Investment in HMCTS’ Property Directorate, the key challenge will be developing and implementing the annual capital programme in a testing context. The court estate has evolved over a number of years and faces a significant maintenance challenge in light of historic year on year funding constraints.

We are looking for a deputy director who is a leader in the field. You will be responsible for managing a capital maintenance and improvement programme in excess of £100m pa. Currently this involves more than 400 projects across the estate, from replacement of equipment to large scale capital projects such as roof replacement and the fit out of new courts. Working closely with colleagues and the judiciary, you will also be instrumental in shaping decisions.

In conjunction with colleagues across the organisation, Ministry of Justice (MoJ) Estates and the judiciary, you will develop a strategic direction, along with short, medium and long term planning for the court and tribunal estate, whilst shaping our capital maintenance programme to ensure that our operations are supported by wind and water-tight buildings; safe, sound and secure for the provision of our services.

The capital programming challenge offers a skilled and confident candidate an impactful, stretching and rewarding role. If you think you have the experience and energy to take this challenge on, we would be very keen to hear from you.

We welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including groups currently underrepresented in our workforce and pride ourselves as being an employer of choice. To find out more about how we champion diversity and inclusion in the workplace, visit:
