Chartered Surveyor – Compulsory Purchase Valuer – South West

  • Reference number: 457278
  • Salary: £59,342
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Work pattern: Flexible, with at least 60% of your working time spent at your principal workplace
  • Location: Bristol, Exeter, Oxford, Southampton and St. Austell

Who we are

The Valuation Office Agency is the public sector’s property valuation experts and advisers with a vision to be a world-leading provider of public sector valuations. Our work is vital to the collection of over £60 billion of revenue, which goes back into communities, touching every citizen and every business across England and Wales.

Your role with us

In this role, you’ll take the lead on a varied and complex portfolio of compulsory purchase and compensation work within our Transport Sector. Working across major infrastructure projects for high-profile public sector clients, you’ll bring your valuation expertise to cases that can span from early scheme development through to final settlement.

You’ll be trusted to handle complex casework with confidence. Providing clear technical advice to clients and colleagues, you’ll ensure risks, issues and wider project impacts are identified early and handled effectively. As part of a fast-moving, multi-disciplinary environment, you’ll work closely with stakeholders across District Valuer Services to support the delivery of nationally significant transport schemes.

The role also brings opportunities to oversee high-profile projects, contribute to litigation matters and, where needed, act as an expert witness in formal proceedings. Alongside your casework responsibilities, you’ll play an important part in strengthening capability across the team – offering guidance to less experienced colleagues, sharing specialist knowledge and supporting the wider management team in building expertise across the sector.

Who we’re looking for

You’re an accomplished Chartered Surveyor with deep technical knowledge of compulsory purchase and compensation, backed by strong practical experience in delivering complex valuation work. MRICS or FRICS qualified, and eligible to join the RICS Valuer Registration Scheme, you bring a confident grasp of compulsory purchase legislation, relevant case law, codes of practice and the wider market context that shapes this work.

You’re someone who can quickly get to the heart of a problem, understand what clients really need and provide thoughtful challenge where needed to help shape the right approach. You’re comfortable working on high-value, complex cases, identifying risks and issues early and proposing solutions that are commercially sound, practical and well-evidenced.

You build credibility through the quality of your judgement and the way you work with others. Whether dealing with clients, colleagues or external agents, you bring strong negotiation skills, a collaborative approach and the ability to form trusted relationships that help move cases forward. You also enjoy supporting others, sharing your expertise and coaching colleagues to strengthen case progression and build confidence in their work.

With a full UK driving licence and a willingness to travel and stay away overnight when needed, you’re able to support clients and projects across the region while making the most of the flexible working arrangements available.

The Civil Service embraces diversity and promotes equal opportunities. With this in mind, we run a Disability Confident Scheme for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum selection criteria. Also, please note that successful candidates must meet our security requirements before they can be appointed, and will also undergo a criminal record check.

Closing date: 19 May 2026.
