What is a valuation/rating surveyor?

A valuation or rating surveyor’s task is to assess the value of property, land and business assets for purposes such as sale, loans, inclusion in company accounts, or compensation claims. His or her role is vital in bank lending, accounting, investment, taxation and many other financial activities.


Financial backers – be it a bank or financial institution – will rely on the valuation surveyor to price a land or property. It is therefore a vital role.  He or she will need to be able to assess a site in the context of social, economic and legal settings. They also need to be up-to-speed on issues such as sustainability.


Becoming a valuation/rating surveyor

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation (IRRV) offer training that covers the valuation, legal and taxation aspects of this job.
