Operations Director, Repairs and Maintenance Service

You may have heard of our Newham 2020 Programme. The Council is transforming itself and the way it does business to meet the realities of the current economic climate. The transformation of Newham is unique, from a traditional local government service provider to one where a number of our services are provided through small companies, wholly owned by the Council.

The Repairs and Maintenance Service (RMS) has been in operation as a Newham in-house service since 2011, providing planned and responsive repairs to the Council’s housing stock. However, in line with the Council’s vision and by embracing the ambition and entrepreneurial qualities of our borough, RMS has diversified the range of products and services it offers. As well as repairs to housing stock, it also repairs highways and streetlighting, manufactures windows and doors and even produces high tech modular new build houses utilising an innovative partnership with Travis Perkins.

Over the last three years, RMS has doubled its turnover in the period to approximately £40 million. With the introduction of these products it has demonstrated its market competitiveness, and it is expected that by creating a business it will be able to grow income through trading and create a profit for the local authority as shareholder.

You will lead on obtaining Council approval to set up an external business and then, as Managing Director, successfully run the business delivering repairs and maintenance and other services inside Newham and beyond. The role will provide vision and direction for the delivery of the products and services, ensuring business growth, operational efficiency, value for money and customer service. This is an exciting opportunity in a sector experiencing substantial change and commercial growth whilst retaining a social purpose.

With a successful background in Property Services Management, Facilities Management, Construction or similar services you will possess, the ability to lead a standalone business, excellent leadership skills, commercial acumen and innovation and have an enthusiasm to get things done and drive the corporate agenda of business growth.
