Head of Building and Estate Services – Department of Engineering

The University of Cambridge Department of Engineering is the largest department at the University of Cambridge and one of the leading centres of engineering in the world. The Department's aim is to address the world's most pressing challenges with science and technology. 

The Department of Engineering has a central Cambridge site comprising ~30,000 m2 (GIA) of teaching, research, administrative and social space. At West Cambridge, it has specialist facilities totalling ~20,000 m2. The strategic aim is to bring Engineering together at West Cambridge in a ~100,000 m2 purpose-built campus over the next decade and a new 4380 m2 Civil Engineering Building is already underway. The Head of Building and Estates Services for the Department of Engineering takes the lead role for estate leadership with a remit extending encompassing estates management, masterplanning and estates development across the building and estates portfolio.  You will manage a team of technical professionals including the Building Projects Manager, Health & Safety Officer, Project Administrators and Facilities Manager, who are supported by 31 staff, in the delivery of small, medium and large scale capital projects as well as ongoing building maintenance programmes.

The successful candidate will have gained significant experience of leading estates development and estates management activities across a live, operational, technically complex estate portfolio in a senior role.  You will have worked across a diverse portfolio of properties in a client side estates leadership role and will possess strong communication skills enabling you to work successfully with a diverse range of stakeholders.

It is vital that you have the experience of people leadership and understand the range of skills needed to be an effective leader.  It is anticipated that candidates will possess a professional qualification in a built environment related discipline.
