What is a project manager?

A project manager is responsible for the planning, management, coordination and financial control of a building scheme. He or she will liaise with the client and project team to ensure the project is completed on time and within budget.

The role may also be involved from the initial conception and design of the project, through its construction and completion. The project manager will also provide independent professional advice if needed.

Becoming a project manager

There are several general construction courses at further education level. Check with the Association for Project Management (APM) or the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for the right one.

Work will involve technical competence, leadership skills, human resources and risk management. IT is increasingly important in this role especially for managers working on site.

For more information visit the APM or the CIOB.
